Each lantern is controlled by a Raspberry Pi Zero and has 10 addressable RGB LEDs. The lanterns communicate with Bluetooth to discover the patterns and colors their neighbors are displaying and then react based on the rest of the swarm. My partner Jessica focused on the physical structure and paining the lanterns while I focused on the programming and electronics. The swarm debuted at Autumn Lights in 2025 and have also appeared at events at The Reap Climate Center and at SF Public Works for the 2026 Burning Man Burnal Equinox.
